A distillery for the brand
The Old Tullamore Distillery was once owned by Daniel E. Williams, whose initials put the D.E.W. in the whiskey's name.4,5,6
Tullamore Distillery is William Grant & Sons' whiskey distillery at Clonminch, on the outskirts of Tullamore in County Offaly, opened on 17 September 2014.1,2,3 It brought whiskey making back to Tullamore 60 years after the town's old distillery closed in 1954.4,5,6 Since 2017 it can make all three whiskeys in the Tullamore D.E.W. blend, pot still, malt, and grain, and bottle them on site.3,7,8
Built from May 2013 on piles driven into a peat bog, it opened with 4 copper stills that Forsyths of Rothes, Scotland, made to resemble the old Tullamore stills.1,2,3 When it opened in 2014, the brand's grain and pot still whiskey came from Midleton and its malt from Bushmills, which Tullamore's own whiskey was to replace.10 By 2016 its 6 pot stills could make 3.6 million litres of alcohol a year of malt and pot still whiskey, a style using malted and unmalted barley.4,11,12 One of them, with a distinctive offset neck, is a replica of an original still.4,11,12
A €25 million project added a grain distillery, opened on 19 October 2017 and planned to use Irish wheat, and a new bottling hall.3,7,8 Master blender Brian Kinsman said they wanted a light, green, crisp grain spirit.7
Its pot still, malt, and grain spirits are each triple distilled, which means distilled three times.7,11 A 2021 Drinks Ireland page says it filters river water before mashing, with no chemical treatment.13
