Jamie Walker, great-grandson of former owner Archibald Walker, set it up to offer rare, well-aged malts, picked by a panel that whisky critic Charles MacLean chairs.1,2,3 In 1994 Jamie Walker bought the copyright to Punch magazine's cartoon of William Gladstone, and its Dancey Man became Adelphi's mascot.1
Keith Falconer and his Argyll neighbour Donald Houston approached Jamie Walker in 2003 to buy a hogshead, a size of cask, and ended up buying the whole company in 2004.1,3,4 Adelphi kept bottling straight from single casks, with no added colour and no chill-filtering, which cools whisky and filters out what would cloud it.1,3,4 Alex Bruce, a descendant of Andrew Usher Sr, who is credited with pioneering blended Scotch, joined in 2004.1,6 He says he came to buy whisky for the shop he worked for and was offered the job of running the company.1,6
Adelphi launched its Dales series in 2009, starting with Fascadale and moving into small-batch releases.1 In 2010 Adelphi completed its own bottling and logistics warehouse in Fife.1,2,3 Its headquarters are at Charlestown in Fife.1,2,3
By 2007 demand was rising and older stocks were growing scarce, so Adelphi began planning a distillery, which the Princess Royal opened on 25 July 2014.1,2,4
In 2015 Adelphi launched its Fusion range with The Glover, a blended malt that mixed malt whisky from Longmorn in Scotland and Hanyu in Japan.1,7 Each Fusion whisky is named after a Scot who was influential in the partner country.1,7
