The Grants in Rothes
It was one of the first licensed distilleries in the Scottish Highlands.1,2,3 In 1858 they paid for the railway to be extended south to Rothes.
The Glen Grant is a Speyside distillery in Rothes, founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant.1,2,3 From 1872, James 'The Major' Grant gave it tall, slender pot stills and water-cooling purifiers, which send heavy elements back into the still.1,3,4 Campari Group agreed to buy it in December 2005 and has owned it since 2006.4,5,6

The oldest pour I've had! It was very heavy on the sherry - which isnt my thing, but really interesting to try such an old whisky. Lots of your typical sherry…
An absolute, sublime stunner: chestnut cream, honey and custard lead into a remarkably salty, ultra-dry palate and an outrageously elegant finish.
A wonderfully elegant whisky, balancing lemon and camphor with teas and herbal infusions, and offering superb tension despite a shorter finish.
In 1952 the Grants' firm, J&J Grant, merged with George and J. G. Smith, owner of The Glenlivet, to form The Glenlivet and Glen Grant Distilleries.7,11 In 1961 Douglas Mackessack met Italian businessman Armando Giovinetti, who began importing the single malt to Italy.9 Italy soon became the brand's leading export market.9 Also in 1961, Dennis Malcolm began an apprenticeship at the distillery as a cooper, or barrel maker.1,9 In 1970 The Glenlivet and Glen Grant Distilleries merged with Hill, Thomson & Co and Longmorn-Glenlivet to form The Glenlivet Distillers.3,4,12 He was appointed brewer in 1971, at the age of 24.10
In 1973 a new stillhouse added 2 stills, taking the count from 4 to 6, and gas was brought in to heat them.4 Seagram Distillers bought The Glenlivet Distillers in 1977, which ended the Grant family's involvement.4,11,12 That year 4 more stills went into the new stillhouse, making 10.4 Under Seagram and Pernod Ricard, from 1977 to 2006, staff shrank to 5 and the distillery was run as a production unit.10 In 1983 the old stillhouse closed and 2 larger stills went into the new one, leaving 8.4 The wash stills went back to coal, while the spirit stills switched to steam.4 Dennis Malcolm managed the distillery from 1983 to 1992.3 Pernod Ricard took over Seagram's whisky business in 2001, and Glen Grant came under Chivas Brothers.4
In December 2005 Pernod Ricard agreed to sell Glen Grant and its distillery to Campari Group, to meet a commitment to the European Commission.5,6 The sale, for about €115 million, was completed in 2006.3,4,5 Campari brought back Dennis Malcolm, who was born on the site, and he was appointed Master Distiller in 2006.1,9 In 2009, 11 dunnage warehouses, which are made from stone, were bought from Chivas, and £3.5 million was spent refurbishing them.9,13 In 2013 Prince Charles, now King Charles, opened a new bottling hall; before then, Chivas had bottled Glen Grant under contract.1,10,13 In 2014 Malcolm said the spirit was split between single malts and blending, with Chivas Brothers among its major blending customers.9 By 2016 he said almost all of it was for Glen Grant itself, with only a tiny share for outside customers.10 In 2024 Greig Stables, previously distillery director, took over from Malcolm as Master Distiller.1,14
It uses water from the Back Burn and malt with a peat level below 1ppm, which Whisky Magazine calls unpeated.3,4,13 It ferments in 10 washbacks, wooden vessels made of Oregon pine.4,9,13 Fermentation lasts 48 hours.4,9 There are 4 wash stills for the first distillation and 4 spirit stills for the second.3,9 The stills are tall and slender, and all are heated indirectly.1,4 The purifiers create a lot of reflux, which gives the spirit a light character.4,9
